Fall-oween Blog Hop Day 4

Welcome to day 4 of the Quilt Designer's Fall-o-ween Blog Hop.

Our featured designer today is Kari from New Leaf Stitches.

Hop on over to her blog and see what she has to offer. I am sure it well be great.

The topic of the day is Texture.
As the days start to get cooler I feel the need to change out the decor in the house.

I change out the tomatoes for…

Gourds.

There are so many interesting pumpkins and gourds out there, all with interesting textures.

This old quilt is one of my favorite "texture" things.
This is the front...

but I prefer to use the back because it has more texture.

I pull out my darker colored quilts and my wool applique pictures.
Find the quilt pattern here.
Find the wool applique picture here.

I put woolly chair covers on my chairs and tie raffia around a pumpkin stem.

I bring out the hooked wool table mats.
Bruce made this for me.
Yes, happy to say, my husband is a hooker.

There are a few fall textures that I don't like so much.

Like the slimy, stringy innards of a pumpkin.
Bruce is helping Anthony with his Jack-o-lantern.
Bruce seems to be more into it than Anthony.

Another fall texture I do not like are cockleburs.
Some of you may not have experienced cockleburs.
Again it's a country thing.
In the fall when the men are out in the fields harvesting the crops,
they do not want to take time to come up to the house to eat supper,
so the food is taken out to the fields. My sisters and I would ride
along with mom to take the supper out to the fields.
When we arrived at the fields us girls would get out of the car
and play in the fields while the men ate their supper in the car.
(Kind of like eating at a Drive In.)
It was fun running around in the fields rustling through the corn husks.
But when you were done you had prickly cockleburs stuck allover your socks.
Oh how I hated that feeling.
But there is good in everything.
Did you know that Velcro was modeled after cockleburs?

I am experiencing another texture that I am finding as unpleasant as cockleburs in your socks
I am in the middle of the worst cold I think I have ever had.
When I swallow my throat has the texture of sandpaper.
Under my nose looks and feels like sandpaper.
When I cough I sound like a barking seal.
(Sorry, I guess that would be more of a sound thing than a texture thing.)
And I am sorry but I can find nothing good in this cold.

Hop from blog to blog to see what the other designers have to say about fall texture.

Tomorrow's designer is Terry Atkinson of Atkinson Designs.
Tomorrow's topic will be Clothes.

Here is hoping you can go for walk and enjoy the fall day with all of its many textures.
And may you never find cockleburs in your socks.

See you tomorrow,

From my heart,
Sandy

  17. I love the visual textures this time of year-how a leaf curls just before it falls softly to the ground, the ridges in a pumpkin. I also love the tactile texture of the air-you can feel it changing every day, getting colder and crisper and readying itself for winter.
Ihate when the burrs get into the dogs fur. Really hard to get out.
Hope you are feeling better soon.

  18. Hey! You have Tylenol Sore Throat! Why have I not seen that? I am in the coughing like a barking seal stage of my cold. Afrin has become my best friend and I think I blew out an eardrum this morning while I was blowing my nose... Hope you get better soon!

I know all about cockleburs. My granpa used to be a farmer and you brought back many memories of visiting him over the summer time. Coffee and lunch were brought out to the fields and we would then sit and pull off the cockleburs from our socks.

    Thanks for the memories!

  19. Cute post. OK. Thanks for pointing out the one thing that is better living in Arizona than Ohio when Autumn comes around. No cockleburs!

  20. I hate cockleburs, fall is the time the horses get them in their manes and tails. They are a mess to get out.

  21. I love the quilt on the sofa! And I've been wanting to try applique work...scary stuff there for a novice like me. :)

  22. Don't you love the way rubbing Vick's Vaporub on your chest reminds you of how your Mom made you feel better when you were a kid? That is the only good thing I can think of for the way you feel - colds are a pain! I really enjoyed the fallish fotos of your home - very charming!

  31. We just called them "burrs" and I remember vividly how awful they were to get out, not only from our socks, but our German Shepherd's lovely coat. ugh!
Hope you are feeling better soon. Poor baby!

  34. Hoping you feel better soon. Having a cold, especially at this time of the year, (when the weather is so nice), is a real downer! Enjoyed your story about taking the food out to the fields & running around in the fields. Hope we hear you are feeling better tomorrow when you post. Thanks for the hop.

  35. I hate cockleburs. We have a thing here in the desert that we call goat-heads. I think they my be worse. They get tracked into the house from your shoes, when you step on them in your bare feet it HURTS BAD.

  36. Sorry you are feeling bad. My son is getting it too.

  37. I hope you get better real soon. Colds are the worst, especially in the fall. You can't smell all that Fall baking.

  38. Round here we have a flower called Stickseed or Blue Bur that look like little forget-me-knots. Once the flowers are past the little burs of seed pods reach out and grab a ride on your trousers or socks, or shoe laces. We affectionately call them "hitchhikers". I've always enjoyed sitting and picking them off.

  39. Hope you feel better soon!! I have a sheltie that is a cocklebur magnet!! Be well!

  40. Cockleburrs sound like what we call burdocks here in Maine. I hate it when they split open when you try to get them out and the seeds fall out everywhere. Ewww, now I itch...

Try Delsym 12 hour for your cough. It really works!

  48. Oh dear, I'm sorry you're not feeling well! I've just recovered from what it sounds like you have. I had help of antibiotics ... sinus infection I didn't know about, coughing damaged the throat, no voice. The doctor's office trip was truly worth the visit. Get better soon!
