Today's topic is Scents
When you think of fall scents, burning leaves is one thing that comes to mind.
This is one of my favorite pictures of our son Anthony helping his Dad rake and burn leaves.
In the fall we go from the smell of people grilling burgers and veggies
on the outdoor grill to cheesy potatoes baking in the oven.
Yum. Cheesy potatoes are my favorite!
We never have them in the summer.
Even with air-conditioning one does not want to start the oven very often.
Mmmmm, how about apple cider brewing on the stove?
Or Pumpkin pie baking in the oven?
But here in farm country when the crops start to be harvested
and you step outside at night, it smells like fall.
It is not a scent that I can describe but I am sure you Midwesterners
who live in farm country know what I am talking about.
Then there is this little thing. It has quite a distinct scent, and it is not a good one.
Again if you do not live in farm country you probably do not have these.
(I'm talking about the little rust colored bug on the pumpkin.)
In the fall, when the soybeans are harvested out in the country,
these little pests move to town.
Mom always said there is good in everything.

The only good I can find in them is that they are a nice "fall" color.
Then there are these little critters.
You've head the saying I smell a mouse.
Well I never really smell a mouse but I certainly can hear them.
Again as soon as the crops start coming out of the fields they move into town...
to my attic. I usually have one mouse a fall.
We hear it in the attic, we set the mouse traps, next morning...history.
They are called "field mice". I wish they would stay in the fields.

My project today is a simple little table mat or wall hanging.
Since the topic today is scents, I have named my project Pumpkin Spice
When cooler days start to show up I like to add some texture to my quilts by using a scrappy pieced fabric background mixed with wool appliqué.
I have added some interest with wire and acorn/wool ball embellishments and ric rac.

What a CUTE design. I can totally relate to your descriptions of fall scents--I'm from the Midwest, too, though I live in the city. I started family traditions when my kids were young--going to the pumpkin patch; spending the day at the apple orchard or just taking a walk at the state park. They are now doing those same traditions with their kids. I LOVE FALL.

My favorite Fall scent is the "someone is burning a fire in the fireplace" scent. It's the sign that the crisp, cool days of autumn are here.

What a lovely little project. I just love it. Thank you. I also live in Iowa and am very familiar with the harvest season and the Asian beetles!
But I will say that pumpkin pie baking in the oven is a great fall scent.
Fall smells are my favorite! Not to mention the great temperatures, especially for baking which I have not done all summer! I love your pumpkin mat! We are city suburban people here, but the mice are still a problem.

Ok, that is simply adorable! I love the little acorns and may actually try the wool. I've never done that before. And was that a ladybug that you said smelled? I've never smelled them before but we do get them like crazy here in Alabama. And we had our first day that actually felt like fall yesterday, it was below 90! Love your designs and thanks so much for the pattern. I live in Indiana so can relate to all the smells, colors and of course animals that associated with fall. One of my most favprites is watching the geese flying overhead and honkiing as they land at the nearby pond.

In New Mexico nothing says autumn like the scent of chiles roasting, the taste of Dixon champagne apples and the sight of hot air balloons ascending in the early morning.

Laughed about the mice. I hate them and my kids always laughed at me because I am so scared of them. Now that they have their own places they have all had them at times and I just say it is pay back from the times they made fun of me!

Thanks for your cute pattern. Having lived in farming area of New Jersey and now in the mountains of North Carolina, I can totally relate to the 'smells' of fall. Here, it's the smell of wood-burning stoves, as well as the smell in the air on a cool morning. Can't wait to make this.

My favorite scent of fall is sweet potatoes baking in the oven and apple pie! And goodness your project is too cute. I'll print out the instructions and work on it later. I'm not one to finish something in a day. Our hunting season is about to begin so while all the guys leave for the weekend I'll get to do some sewing. Maybe it will get it done before Christmas decorations are put out.

I used to live "between the cornfields" in IL and you pics brought back wonderful memories. Saving your pattern, gotta finish dh's birthday gift (lap quilt with Elvis fabrics) first.

Thank you for such a cute project. I really like the embellishment idea, too. Fall is a favorite time of mine--the "crisp", earthy scent of fallen leaves on the ground and being raked is great...
I love this little hanging - it will be perfect for my new home! I love fall-the smell of fresh mowed hay, going to the farm in the next town for veggies and fruit and seeing all the pumpkins; catching a whiff of a wood fire from a neighbor's house early in the morning; the smell of baking (something I'll rarely if ever do in the summer); mulled cider; getting out the quilts ... it's a perfect time of year. There is a gnarly old elm across the street from me. I didn't notice it during the summer. It's lost a lot of branches over the years to keep them away from electric and telephone wires, but right now it is the most beautiful shades of red and orange!

I remember having a mouse in our house when I was about 10 and I was so mad at it that I picked it up by the tail and threw it outside. Only afterwards did I realize what I did! The smell of autumn to me would have to be cinnamon. Yummy apple pie, apple cider, apple crisp, pumpkin cookies and pumpkin roll with cream cheese filling all with a touch of cinnamon....OMG I think it is time to bake.....

I'm going to run into town this am & pick up supplies so my 2 grandgirls can make a version of this pumpkin today when they get off the schoolbus at my home. I love this post! Autumn is my favorite season and I know what you mean about the scents of fall harvest. I'm also more than familiar with the very tiny and very cute field mice. They are all around here and come inside when it gets cold (in the kitchen drawers - yuk!).

We have a farm in NY and I can relate to the smells of fall. I think Mother Nature outdoes herself this time of year. But the most immediate resonse of a smell for the season is pumpkin pie spice - lovely pattern that will work up quickly - thank you.
I think I can smell the Apple Cider alredy. We always looked forward to when the Cider Mill would open in the Fall to go for Apple Cider and homemade donuts..oh, what a memory!
Remember - TREE FORTS? We use to make "rooms" from raking leaves into lines which were "walls" to form rooms.

Here in the UK the changing colours are the first sign, followed by really smokey bonfires and fireworks for 5th November.
The bonfires take me straight back to my grandfather who was a pyromaniac at heart and built huge evil smelling smoking bonfires that billowed smoke forever and had the police knocking at the door to complain!
Then there is the smell of the first frosty morning.

I think you have the hardest sense to photograph. Honestly, how do you photograph scent? The picture of the John Deere harvesting was probably the best "portrayal" for me.

Sandy, I drove across farm country this past weekend (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska to Colorado) and harvest is in full swing! I grew up on a farm in Idaho, and was amazed at the size of the combine harvesters they use now. Thanks for evoking such a wonderful scent memory!

I am a midwestern person as well, and everything you've said is absolutely true, including the field mice! We've been having a full moon at night, cool fall weather, with a little rain. Farmers are starting to work in the fields to bring in the corn and soybeans. Beautiful time of the year. Love your table mat.

I love Fall, my favorite season, with its spectacular colors of oranges, reds, yellows, browns, and greens. The Fall Scents of spiced apple cider, campfires, pumpkin pie just out of the oven...Hmmm " Life is good". The lil pumpkin table quilt is sooooo cute and the lil details of the rick rack and the woolen acorns are awesome touches. Thank you for sharing.

As a kid - I loved the smell of burning leaves - and all the fun that came before the burning - raking them up, jumping in the pile. I miss that smell living in New York City (car exhaust just doesn't compare!) - so when I am out in the countryside and smell burning leaves I am transported back in time - and let my imagination wander remembering days gone by!
Sandy, I am from Superior, IA and my sister still lives on a farm near Estherville. I love this little pumpkin piece. Fall is my favorite time of year and the colors are so bright and the fragrances are just delightful. Thanks for sharing this pattern. This is one I will definitely make and put on my fall table.
I enjoyed your comments about fall in the Midwest. I'm a Nebraska farm girl and its almost time for the combines to get rolling. There is a certain crispness to the air that tells you its harvest time. Consider yourself lucky to only have ONE mouse per year!! Love your cute pumpkin pattern.
