Today's topic is Scents
When you think of fall scents, burning leaves is one thing that comes to mind.
This is one of my favorite pictures of our son Anthony helping his Dad rake and burn leaves.
In the fall we go from the smell of people grilling burgers and veggies
on the outdoor grill to cheesy potatoes baking in the oven.
Yum. Cheesy potatoes are my favorite!
We never have them in the summer.
Even with air-conditioning one does not want to start the oven very often.
Mmmmm, how about apple cider brewing on the stove?
Or Pumpkin pie baking in the oven?
and you step outside at night, it smells like fall.
It is not a scent that I can describe but I am sure you Midwesterners
who live in farm country know what I am talking about.
Then there is this little thing. It has quite a distinct scent, and it is not a good one.
Again if you do not live in farm country you probably do not have these.
(I'm talking about the little rust colored bug on the pumpkin.)
these little pests move to town.
Mom always said there is good in everything.
Mom always said there is good in everything.
The only good I can find in them is that they are a nice "fall" color.
Then there are these little critters.
You've head the saying I smell a mouse.
Well I never really smell a mouse but I certainly can hear them.
Again as soon as the crops start coming out of the fields they move into town...
to my attic. I usually have one mouse a fall.
We hear it in the attic, we set the mouse traps, next morning...history.
They are called "field mice". I wish they would stay in the fields.
They are called "field mice". I wish they would stay in the fields.
My sister Brenda has designed the kind of field mouse that you would want in your house.
Very cute.
Check it out at Country Stitches.
You won't smell or hear this mouse.
My project today is a simple little table mat or wall hanging.
Since the topic today is scents, I have named my project Pumpkin Spice
When cooler days start to show up I like to add some texture to my quilts by using a scrappy pieced fabric background mixed with wool appliqué.
I have added some interest with wire and acorn/wool ball embellishments and ric rac.
Print or download pattern here.
There are two pages. Page 1 is the templates
and page 2 is the materials needed and instructions.
You can buy the acorns on Etsy.com
Thia project is quick and easy and you could easily make it tonight.
.
I also have many new fall patterns posted on my website.
Check them out here.

I have lived in the country for enough years that I relate to your mouse references for sure. I wisih I could say that the incidences were limited to one per fall but no; thankfully, our cat was a good mouser. What a cute pattern you have shared. I've never worked with wools and this will enetice me to give it a try. Thank you
ReplyDeleteWhat a CUTE design. I can totally relate to your descriptions of fall scents--I'm from the Midwest, too, though I live in the city. I started family traditions when my kids were young--going to the pumpkin patch; spending the day at the apple orchard or just taking a walk at the state park. They are now doing those same traditions with their kids. I LOVE FALL.
ReplyDeletelove the hanging, super cute!!! i want to make one, but i currently do not have my own place, living with the mother in law :O( hopefully sometimes within the next few years ;o}
ReplyDeleteLove the smell of Fall! I also love your cute pattern. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Fall scent is the "someone is burning a fire in the fireplace" scent. It's the sign that the crisp, cool days of autumn are here.
ReplyDeleteI have to say this blog hop is such a nice way to start a day!!
ReplyDeleteI love the way your images stir up those fall scents. And the pattern is adorable! Thanks so much :)
What a perfect size for our 12" table stand. Can't wait to make it. Thank you.
ReplyDeletethanks for the blog hop!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely little project. I just love it. Thank you. I also live in Iowa and am very familiar with the harvest season and the Asian beetles!
ReplyDeleteBut I will say that pumpkin pie baking in the oven is a great fall scent.
Fall smells are my favorite! Not to mention the great temperatures, especially for baking which I have not done all summer! I love your pumpkin mat! We are city suburban people here, but the mice are still a problem.
ReplyDeleteFall smells and a pumpkin table rug...lovely..thank you..
ReplyDelete( ps. tired of table runners..I am now calling them table rugs...)
blessings msamm
I agree with you on the field mice. They are cute but they belong out in the fields and not in my house! Thank you for the blog hop!
ReplyDeleteFall is definitely my favorite time! Your pumpkin is adorable and the blog hop is great fun. Thanks for sharing:)
ReplyDeleteThere's a children's book called "A Year Down Yonder" where Grandma Dowdel has a VERY interesting way to rid her country home of mice... I won't spoil it for you, but it's worth the time to read it. (Author is Richard Peck) And thanks for the pattern. It will be perfect for a friend who's driving me to and from work while I'm in a cast...
ReplyDeleteThank you! Thank you! Thank you! This little quilt is absolutely adorable! I'm going to make it tonight after work. Fall is my favorite time of the year - I discovered I need some new little fall quilts since my daughter has graciously relieved me of mine! (New house to decorate). Thanks again! Happy Fall Ya'll!
ReplyDeletejulie stchsluv@aol.com
Love your patterns, What a cute pumpkin. Thanks
ReplyDeleteOk, that is simply adorable! I love the little acorns and may actually try the wool. I've never done that before. And was that a ladybug that you said smelled? I've never smelled them before but we do get them like crazy here in Alabama. And we had our first day that actually felt like fall yesterday, it was below 90! Thanks for posting the pattern and have a great day.
ReplyDeleteLove your designs and thanks so much for the pattern. I live in Indiana so can relate to all the smells, colors and of course animals that associated with fall. One of my most favprites is watching the geese flying overhead and honkiing as they land at the nearby pond.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sandy! We were 4 for 4 with the mouse traps in our attic yesterday! And I don't even have any fields nearby!
ReplyDeleteAh, the first mouse--I've caught him already. Love the quick and easy table mat. Fall definitely smells different when harvest begins.
ReplyDeleteIn New Mexico nothing says autumn like the scent of chiles roasting, the taste of Dixon champagne apples and the sight of hot air balloons ascending in the early morning.
ReplyDeleteYum, pumpkin pie and burning leaves, it doesn't get any better.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that little bug a lady bug eating the aphids off the plants?
Thank you for the pattern. The pumpkin is perfect for a wall hanging I want to make and I love the patchwork background. You've got me pulling fabric.
I like your pumpkin . In my country (France) there are a lot of pumpkins in the fields in autumn.
ReplyDeleteBest regards from France
Thanks for the cute pattern. I love all the things about fall.
ReplyDeleteLaughed about the mice. I hate them and my kids always laughed at me because I am so scared of them. Now that they have their own places they have all had them at times and I just say it is pay back from the times they made fun of me!
I cant wait for cooler weather....89 does not inspire one to make chili yet. Another month or so her in Fl.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone ever have too many pumpkin quilts? Every time I make one I say--- this is the last one.... and then there's another cute one out there I have to make....thanks for the pattern...
ReplyDeleteThanks for your cute pattern. Having lived in farming area of New Jersey and now in the mountains of North Carolina, I can totally relate to the 'smells' of fall. Here, it's the smell of wood-burning stoves, as well as the smell in the air on a cool morning. Can't wait to make this.
ReplyDeleteHave a good day.
What a perfect pumpkin! Thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteYour Table Mat looks Cute!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance!
Fall is my favorite time of the year. I can relate to all the smells and sounds. Thanks for the
ReplyDeletethe pattern. I hope to make it soon. Love working with wool and fabric.
What a fun project for fall. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove this little pattern! Thanks so much! :0)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite scent of fall is sweet potatoes baking in the oven and apple pie! And goodness your project is too cute. I'll print out the instructions and work on it later. I'm not one to finish something in a day. Our hunting season is about to begin so while all the guys leave for the weekend I'll get to do some sewing. Maybe it will get it done before Christmas decorations are put out.
ReplyDeleteI love the little felted acorn balls....very cute...
ReplyDeleteLove the mouse!
ReplyDeleteI've got to try wool applique...this looks like the perfect pattern. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteGreat project!! I love pumpkins!! :)
ReplyDeleteRachel
Thank you so very much for the cute pattern...
ReplyDeleteLove the ric rac accent!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute little project. I love fall decorating. This would just be perfect for my little end table.
ReplyDeleteFall is a pretty time of year in farm country. I know all the things you mentioned and I love fall. Thankfully I have left the mice behind in an old house. I really like your choice for background in the little pumpkin wall hanging.
ReplyDeleteThat's adorable! Definitely something that could be done this evening...love it! Thanks for the pattern.
ReplyDeleteLove the quick pattern, thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this cute table mat pattern. I love pumpkins and the wool will give it added texture. The scents of fall are my favorite!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute! I have done so many fall/halloween items this year BUT will have to do another!!! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI used to live "between the cornfields" in IL and you pics brought back wonderful memories. Saving your pattern, gotta finish dh's birthday gift (lap quilt with Elvis fabrics) first.
ReplyDeleteMost of the fall scents I recall are due to all the scented candles with Fall themes. LOL! Love your project!
ReplyDeletePumpkins....love pumpkins!! And wool! Great project...thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteOh cant wait till my orange wool comes in the mail. I love pumpkins and this one it going to be a lot of fun to make. Thanks so much.

What a cute little pumpkin. I haven't done any work in wool, but this may just be the first. Thanks for this wonderful hop!
ReplyDeleteHi-Thanks for the memories of living on a farm when I was small--I am so glad for the time I spent there--thanks for the cute pumpkin wall hanging----Happy Fall............
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea; blog hop. Pumpkin spice is amazing. Your mice are adorable and your crafty fall items are great. Happy Fall!
ReplyDeleteThis would be very cute to spice up my office!
ReplyDeletesomehow the site didn't let me leave my e-mail address...thanks for the cute pattern--love the Hop...
ReplyDeleteLove the little pumpkin mat, thanks. The cheesy potatoes look fantastic. I live in ranch country in a log cabin and contstantly battle mice.
ReplyDeleteNot only is fall the most colorful season, but also has many scents to stir your creativity and memories. what a cute table mat. i love the details adding dimension. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute Table Mat!! Unfortunately, I can all too well relate to the mouse story since I also have a country house. The field mice like to come into the garage and take up residence!!
ReplyDeleteI like fall colors . Wonderful pumpkin . Thanks
ReplyDeleteLove your country scents! I don't miss living around farms, but when we drive through southern Ontario the smell reminds me of childhood and visiting my great grandmother's farm. Love your pumpkin. And those cheesy potatoes smell amazing right through my computer screen! Thanks for a great hoppy day.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this little pumpkin wall hanging! How fun! Thank you for sharing it with us.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you - I do not like the scent of what we call Japanese Beetles or else the ucky ladybugs (vs. the cute ladybugs). We're still trying to cut hay, but, hope to start harvest this week. Thanks again. HUGS...
Love your litle pattern and the mouse story...though we all know that mice are no longer cute once they get in the house.

i love living in the country! about three years ago, those beetles swarmed all over our house, does anyone else remember that? pumpkin spice is adorable!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute pattern, thank you! I just love that picture of your son, he is darling.
ReplyDeleteLove the added touch of rick rack.
ReplyDeleteCute pattern! Love all the pics in your post...I can almost smell pumpkin pie cooking
ReplyDeleteI love your descriptions of farm country. I live in a small city, but still look forward every year to a trip to the pumpkin field and several trips to different orchards - love those fresh-picked apples!

That pattern is so cute! Thanks for sharing it. I love applique on a pieced background.
ReplyDeletewhat a wonderful post, with your words and pictures I could almost smell the scents here at home. Thanks for sharing the pattern it will help me to welcome fall to my home.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pattern, it is very cute! I love the idea of putting the pumpkins in the bowls as a decoration, I think I shall be borrowing that one :) Thank you again!
ReplyDeleteI have followed you for a long time and have quite a few of your patterns. Thanks for the fall pattern. Phyllis
ReplyDeleteThank you for such a cute project. I really like the embellishment idea, too. Fall is a favorite time of mine--the "crisp", earthy scent of fallen leaves on the ground and being raked is great...
ReplyDeleteI love this little hanging - it will be perfect for my new home! I love fall-the smell of fresh mowed hay, going to the farm in the next town for veggies and fruit and seeing all the pumpkins; catching a whiff of a wood fire from a neighbor's house early in the morning; the smell of baking (something I'll rarely if ever do in the summer); mulled cider; getting out the quilts ... it's a perfect time of year. There is a gnarly old elm across the street from me. I didn't notice it during the summer. It's lost a lot of branches over the years to keep them away from electric and telephone wires, but right now it is the most beautiful shades of red and orange!
ReplyDeleteLove your pictures & pattern! Have been a big fan of your fabric lines and projects for several years.
ReplyDeleteLove the scent of the cider and cinnamon on the stove, but I don't make it often for just the two of us. Great photos!! Love your little mat, but it would also be super if one was in a camper or motor home. I used to look for small designs like that when we had ours. Thanks, Sandy!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cute pattern. Off to whip one up now.
ReplyDeleteWe too have caught our first fall mouse. Love your site and patterns.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great little pumpkin Sandy. We don;t have "fall" in Queensland, Australia. So it is great to read about the smells. But I think you can keep your little field mice. They look cute, but I bet they're not that cute when they move in with you!! Cheers Gloria
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the pattern. My husband is going to get suspicious when I am going to the quilt store every day for 10 days! :-) I am a midwestern country girl exiled to the suburbs. I remember having a mouse in our house when I was about 10 and I was so mad at it that I picked it up by the tail and threw it outside. Only afterwards did I realize what I did! I do know the smells... Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cute pattern. I love the small and simple. I think I will add a mouse to this pattern.
ReplyDeleteThe smell of autumn to me would have to be cinnamon. Yummy apple pie, apple cider, apple crisp, pumpkin cookies and pumpkin roll with cream cheese filling all with a touch of cinnamon....OMG I think it is time to bake.....
Thanks for the pattern!! I love it!!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to run into town this am & pick up supplies so my 2 grandgirls can make a version of this pumpkin today when they get off the schoolbus at my home. They love anything crafty and enjoy searching in my sewing room for "stuff". I like this and will make mine while they create their own gift for their mom. Thank you. Never too young to start them!
ReplyDeleteI love the little acorns. They are just too cute!
ReplyDeleteI love Autumn! Colors, smells, sights...everything! Thank you for your pattern...lovely. :)
ReplyDeleteI too love the scent of cinnamon and cloves. I have a pot of it simmering from Oct. to Dec. every year.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the cute mat pattern. Perfect for my fav time of the year decorating.
What a cute wallhanging! I may need to expand my horizons and actually buy some wool to try this. Can you share your cheesy potatoes recipe? I have one that I use, but yours look especially tasty. dsb448@att.net

Being a farmer's wife I can definitely identify with all the smells you described although the bugs and mice I can sure do without! Your pumpkin spice pattern is so cute! Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteWonderful blog today. I love the pumpkin project. Thanks.
ReplyDeletevery cute pattern - i love your fabric
ReplyDeleteHi Sandy,
ReplyDeleteI love this post! Autumn is my favorite season and I know what you mean about the scents of fall harvest. I'm also more than familiar with the very tiny and very cute field mice. They are all around here and come inside when it gets cold (in the kitchen drawers - yuk!).
This pattern/project is super cute and I will definitely be using it. Thanks so much for your generosity!
Aren't the smells of fall fantastic, spiciness leaves, apples, pumpkins, wood furnaces on very crisp fall days. Love your pumpkin pattern and all things things you share on your blog. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI love the project and all your wonderful pictures - except the mouse. I have a beanfield right beside my yard and dread the thought of the mice coming in soon.
ReplyDeleteThe cheesy potatoes look wonderful - I would love to have the recipe.
I miss seeing fall! Its going to be 106 here in Vegas today, sigh.
ReplyDeleteWe have a farm in NY and I can relate to the smells of fall. I think Mother Nature outdoes herself this time of year. But the most immediate resonse of a smell for the season is pumpkin pie spice - lovely pattern that will work up quickly - thank you.
ReplyDeleteI think I can smell the Apple Cider alredy. We always looked forward to when the Cider Mill would open in the Fall to go for Apple Cider and homemade donuts..oh, what a memory!
ReplyDeleteRemember - TREE FORTS? We use to make "rooms" from raking leaves into lines which were "walls" to form rooms.
Thank you for Pumpkin Spice. I really think I'll make this today. I absolutely love pumpkins and have all the materials necessary to get started.
Happy Fall.
Very cute!
ReplyDeletei love the combined textures on this piece. thanks for the pattern!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the adorable pattern!
ReplyDeleteHappy Fall,
~ jes
LOVE your pattern. Fall is the best time of year, along with the colors and smells.
ReplyDeleteYour project is so cute - no surprise!
ReplyDeleteI agree it is totally hard to describe the smell of fall...it's just a familiar smell and you know its fall. I do love the smell of pumpkin pie and apple pie, definatley smells of fall.
ReplyDeletePumpkin Spice is adorable - the embellishments really take it up a notch - thank you!
ReplyDeleteI live in the country with a farm up the street, I sure can relate to everything you said. And I love your pumpkin, going to make one today :)

ReplyDeleteThanks for the lovely pattern. I just love the pumpkin and the little felted acorns.
ReplyDeleteMorning Sandy and thank you for your memories and a lovely pattern.
ReplyDeleteHere in the UK the changing colours are the first sign, followed by really smokey bonfires and fireworks for 5th November.
The bonfires take me straight back to my grandfather who was a pyromaniac at heart and built huge evil smelling smoking bonfires that billowed smoke forever and had the police knocking at the door to complain!
Then there is the smell of the first frosty morning.
Adorable! There is nothing quite like fall, I love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the adorable pattern! Love the little acorns ... perfect!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for some pumpkin pie myself ... my 12 yo dd wants to learn how to make them from scratch this year ... and I mean from scratch! Pie pumpkins, here we come!
I love fall too, especially the trees when they show their fall colors. Thanks for the blog hop - its great!

ReplyDeleteMmmm...stewed apples on the stove, after coming in from the crisp cool air smelling of leaves...now that is Autumn to me!
ReplyDeleteI think you have the hardest sense to photograph. Honestly, how do you photograph scent? The picture of the John Deere harvesting was probably the best "portrayal" for me.
ReplyDeleteI love your pumpkin spice mini quilt. It's so cute!!! Thanks for sharing it with us. I love the smell of fall. It's my favorite season of the year.

ReplyDeleteWhat a darling mat! I am in need of a quick b'day gift and I think this is it. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteSandy, I drove across farm country this past weekend (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska to Colorado) and harvest is in full swing! I grew up on a farm in Idaho, and was amazed at the size of the combine harvesters they use now. Thanks for evoking such a wonderful scent memory!

ReplyDeleteLoved reading your article and the pumpkin pattern is adorable.
ReplyDeleteI am a midwestern person as well, and everything you've said is absolutely true, including the field mice! We've been having a full moon at night, cool fall weather, with a little rain. Farmers are starting to work in the fields to bring in the corn and soybeans. Beautiful time of the year. Love your table mat.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute pumpkin pattern! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love Fall, my favorite season, with its spectacular colors of oranges, reds, yellows, browns, and greens. The Fall Scents of spiced apple cider, campfires, pumpkin pie just out of the oven...Hmmm " Life is good". The lil pumpkin table quilt is sooooo cute and the lil details of the rick rack and the woolen acorns are awesome touches. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this pattern. I love the wool pumpkin!
ReplyDeleteI like the free project! The wool balls and twisted wire add a special touch.
ReplyDeleteI love the smell of walking through an apple orchard. Such a crisp, fesh smell. And, the taste! Well, that’s for another post. Thanks for the pattern. I love autumn, the colour orange and pumpkins!
ReplyDeleteYou have pullled many memories from their "files". we can no longer burn leaves --- into the compost pile they go --- but, yes, the fragrance was so much a part of my growing up years. Love the project! Thanks for sharing your creativity.

ReplyDeleteI loved the smell of burning leaves-can't do that anymore in the city. Thanks for the cute pattern- fall is my favorite season.
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect little project - love the fact that it can be made in an evening.....THANKS!

Love the pumpkin topper pattern, especially the acorns!
ReplyDeleteAs a kid - I loved the smell of burning leaves - and all the fun that came before the burning - raking them up, jumping in the pile. I miss that smell living in New York City (car exhaust just doesn't compare!) - so when I am out in the countryside and smell burning leaves I am transported back in time - and let my imagination wander remembering days gone by!
ReplyDeleteSandy, I am from Superior, IA and my sister still lives on a farm near Estherville. I love this little pumpkin piece. Fall is my favorite time of year and the colors are so bright and the fragrances are just delightful. Thanks for sharing this pattern. This is one I will definitely make and put on my fall table.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your comments about fall in the Midwest. I'm a Nebraska farm girl and its almost time for the combines to get rolling. There is a certain crispness to the air that tells you its harvest time. Consider yourself lucky to only have ONE mouse per year!! Love your cute pumpkin pattern.
ReplyDeleteI love this table mat. It is so cute.
ReplyDeleteOh the smells of Autumn! Love anything pumpkin or apples....baking in the oven. MMMM! Thanks for such a great pattern and it has my favorite...PUMPKINS on it! Love the embellishments ideas too.
