Twenty-five Years of Blizzards

We have a winner for this post. Maria you are the winner. Please email me your address so I can send you your prize.
Twenty-five years of blizzards.

And I don't mean a snowstorm, although here in Iowa

I am sure we have had at least one blizzard a year for the last twenty-five years.

I mean the Dairy Queen Blizzard, which is celebrating it's 25th birthday.

Today my seamstresses are here proofing patterns - a tedious job that we really dislike.
It was decided that a Mini Blizzard would really make the task seem less tedious.
Today Dairy Queen will donate $1.00 to the Childrens' Miracle Network for every Blizzard sold- another reason to have a blizzard.

My favorite Blizzard flavor is Pecan Cluster.
Sandy and Lori opted for Butterfinger.
What is your favorite flavor?

Isn't this just adorable.
And half the calories - you gotta love it.

Tell me your favorite flavor in a comment.
All comments with a favorite flavor will be put in a drawing.
The winner will win an Awesome Charm Pack™ and an Acorn Alley pattern.

I grew up in Jackson Minnesota.
Coming into town from the south there was a tiny little Dairy Queen.
Sadly I could not find a picture of the old Jackson Dairy Queen
but it looked kind of like this.
My sister Brenda could never figure out
how the people got into the Dairy Queen…
Did they really crawl through the tiny little order window?
She was sure they did for there was no door - at least not one that she could see.

It was such a treat to stop at the Dairy Queen.
At that time you could buy a cone for a nickel.

One of my favorite treats as a child
was the Buster Bar - oooh I loved that chocolate fudge middle.
Sometimes I would get brain freeze.

Once a year our school bus would stop
at the Dairy Queen on our way out of town.
I am sure that would not be permitted these days.
Sure glad I grew up in the day were a school bus stopping
at a Dairy Queen was okay.

Now go treat yourself to a Mini Blizzard - Childrens' Miracle Network will appreciate it.

From my heart,

Sandy

  3. Love the Oreo blizzards...I had no idea blizzards were 25 years old. I have fond memories of riding in the back of my parents truck to get to the closest Dairy Queen which was about 5 miles away...I always got chocolate dipped cones...and my Dad always got Dilly Bars!

  4. Blizzards were very popular around here when my kids were younger and they opened a brand new Dairy Queen in a shopping center near us. I always opted for the Butterfinger one!

Stopping at the Dairy Queen on a bus, now there's a great childhood remembrance! How lucky you did not have to get in through the order window :)

  5. We don't have Dairy Queen's around here anymore. But recently we were in Witchita and of course we had to visit a Dairy Queen. Hubby got the Golden Oreo Blizzard and I got the Chocolate Covered Strawberry Blizzard. Boy was that yummy! Wish I can go back and get another one!

  6. I don't have a favorite, I really like to try the seasonal offerings. My four year old LOVES the M&M's blizzard. She thinks it's so magical that she can have ice cream AND M&M's at once (forbidden at home!)

here in MT, the DQ's close for the season around November, open for Valentines Day and if the weather is good it stays open, if it's still cold it will close again until Easter

  7. Reeses is my favorite!! I can't believe they are 25 years old! We had Dairy Queen a lot when I was a kid. Our family loved the chocolate dipped ice cream cones...yum yum!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. My fav is an oreo blizzard but my son is allergic to peanuts so we never go there...so the last one I had was a Quilt MN shop hop a few years ago!

  9. I had the Strawberry Cheesequake blizzard tonight. I took my hubby and his mom for blizzards to celebrate Miracle treat day. Love supporting CMN!

  10. As a little girl I use to get "Dilly Bars" with my family at the DQ. I haven't had a blizzard in years, until 2 nights ago. My sis and I got their mini Blizzards - the perfect size. I wanted my favorite (Resee's Peanut Butter Cup) but they were out! Can you believe that!?! So my next choice was Heath. Yummy!

  11. My favorite flavor is a new one. Chocolate Extreme. Congrats Dairy Queen. Thank you for the wonderful give-away. Take care and God bless, Cory

  12. There is no DQ near us! But I think I would like a butterfinger one. =)

  14. Ohhh you really should try the snickers with extra stuff of heath. it's soo yummy.

  15. I am just a straight oreo blizzard lover! Funny that you talk about this on your blog. I had a patient from England yesterday that mentioned he was going to Wendy's or Dairy Queen after his appt. because they don't have that in England. We are fortunate here ;)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Would you believe I've never had a Blizzard? Must rectify that. However, my choice in ice cream is always vanilla...with chocolate sauce if I throw caution to the wind.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I haven't had a Blizzard in ages - thanks for putting that thought in my head! I love the fresh tastes of a Hawaiian blizzard, although the Chocolate Extreme often calls out to me. Thanks for sharing your memories and thinking up a "cool" give-away.

  23. My favorite flavor is Oreo! My mom loves Buster Bars. Every year before the Dairy Queen closes--about November in small town Wyoming--the owner brings my mom over about a dozen Buster Bars to put in her freezer to last her until the spring when it reopens!

  24. Pecan Cluster. I grew up in Marshall, not so far from Jackson, and we had a DQ that looked much like the picture you included. Our big decision was what kind of Dilly Bar we were going to get..chocolate, butterscotch, or strawberry.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Love anything with chocolate. Sometimes I order the banana cream pie blizzard made with chocolate ice cream. Love Blizzards.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Okay, order me up a Mini Blizzard - make mine Cookie Dough - my ALL-TIME favorite.

  31. I'm embarrassed...we had Tastee Freeze where I grew up and I've rarely gone to DQ as an adult so have never had a Blizzard. I've had a few Buster Bars though which are quite tasty. I think a butterfinger mini sounds like it would hit the spot today!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh! My favorite Blizzard is
    M & M!!!
But i haven't had one in FOREVER!
I may just have to go get me a mini now.

  33. When I was a kid I lived so close I could walk to one of those little old Dairy Queens and buy a malt for 35 cents! My friend and I would scrub our huge kitchen floor for my mom (on our hands and knees, of course!)to earn the money to go.
Think my favorite Blizzard flavor has to be German chocolate.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh, my. I have to admit that I am addicted to the Georgia Mud Fudge Blizzard. so good. Thanks for the chance to win.

  38. I've never had a Blizzard, but you did remind me of my favorite ice cream treat as a child. I grew up in a little town called Belleville, Michigan, back in the 50's. My grandparents used to take me to the Rexall drugstore on Main Street, where they had a lunch counter. I always ordered a dish of butter pecan ice cream! All the other kids got chocolate or vanilla and thought I was an odd ball for choosing butter pecan. I just loved those nuts!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Dairy Queen had a big place in my life growing up, too. My family usually ordered the same thing every time. When I rarely ordered a blizzard, my favorite flavor would be either Mocha Chip or M & M or if they had flavor of the month Mint Oreo. But my very favorite thing from Dairy Queen is a vanilla cone dipped in chocolate. My mother always used to get a Peanut Buster Parfait. She was born in the depression, was very frugal, so a Peanut Buster Parfait was a big splurge for her. Growing up we had miniature dachsunds. On their birthdays we would take them to Dairy Queen for a vanilla cone. Fortunately their birthdays were in the summer - Bastille Day (July 14) for one and August 8 for the other. Thanks, Sandy for bringing back these great memories and also helping DQ help CMN.

I love Dairy Queen ice cream cones the best although I am a fan of Buster bars.
We do have a Dairy Queen close by that we visit occasionally.
Thanks for the chance to win your pattern and charm pack.

  132. I love the butterfinger, too. 35 years ago when I married my husband he was going to college at Murray State University in KY and they had a DQ just like the one in your picture. I would order a chocolate chip malt. They streamed the hot chocolate that they dipped the cones in into the malt and the chocolate turned into little hard pieces. It was the BEST thing in the world. 30 years later we went back to visit and the DQ was still there and they still made the chocolate chip malt the same way. I ordered one and it tasted EXACTLY as I had remembered. It was SOOOOOO good. I can almost taste it. Unfortunately, there is no DQ near us now so I'll have to wait until I go on a trip to get a blizzard. Thanks for the post.
