Today's topic is Scents

When you think of fall scents, burning leaves is one thing that comes to mind.
This is one of my favorite pictures of our son Anthony helping his Dad rake and burn leaves.

In the fall we go from the smell of people grilling burgers and veggies
on the outdoor grill to cheesy potatoes baking in the oven.

Yum. Cheesy potatoes are my favorite!
We never have them in the summer.
Even with air-conditioning one does not want to start the oven very often.

Mmmmm, how about apple cider brewing on the stove?

Or Pumpkin pie baking in the oven?
and you step outside at night, it smells like fall.
It is not a scent that I can describe but I am sure you Midwesterners
who live in farm country know what I am talking about.

Then there is this little thing. It has quite a distinct scent, and it is not a good one.
Again if you do not live in farm country you probably do not have these.
(I'm talking about the little rust colored bug on the pumpkin.)
these little pests move to town.
Mom always said there is good in everything.
Mom always said there is good in everything.
The only good I can find in them is that they are a nice "fall" color.

Then there are these little critters.
You've head the saying I smell a mouse.
Well I never really smell a mouse but I certainly can hear them.
Again as soon as the crops start coming out of the fields they move into town...
to my attic. I usually have one mouse a fall.
We hear it in the attic, we set the mouse traps, next morning...history.
They are called "field mice". I wish they would stay in the fields.
They are called "field mice". I wish they would stay in the fields.

My sister Brenda has designed the kind of field mouse that you would want in your house.
Very cute.
Check it out at Country Stitches.
You won't smell or hear this mouse.

My project today is a simple little table mat or wall hanging.
Since the topic today is scents, I have named my project Pumpkin Spice
When cooler days start to show up I like to add some texture to my quilts by using a scrappy pieced fabric background mixed with wool appliqué.

I have added some interest with wire and acorn/wool ball embellishments and ric rac.
Print or download pattern here.
There are two pages. Page 1 is the templates
and page 2 is the materials needed and instructions.
You can buy the acorns on Etsy.com
Thia project is quick and easy and you could easily make it tonight.
.
I also have many new fall patterns posted on my website.
Check them out here.

ReplyDeleteOh your pumpkin pattern is too cute! gosh now i may have to choose. I loved the post on smell/scents and just yesterday I was making applesauce and apple butter for the very first time! and I"m no 20's something either. I had a great learning experience with it. Including realising that the tall-ish stockpot we had did not exist anymore. I wonder if it is now residing at my son's house in Daytona. He probably does not have it, but it is much easier to say "it must have walked to Daytona" than to admit perhaps I just don't remember.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm queuing up your pattern too! I'm going to have a wealth of lovely Fall patterns after this is through. Thank you to all of you.

ReplyDeleteLove, love, love the tastes of fall. I can remember my grandparents' fall visit to our house from the farm. They always brought boxes of apples and pears. Yum! A bite into a crisp apple with juice running down my chin, headed out to commune with my horse after school. that was a perfect fall day for me growing up!
ReplyDeleteCute fall table mat. Fall is my favorite season and these projects are getting me in the mode that summer is really over. Thanks for the cute project.
ReplyDeleteAll this talk about food makes it really hard to stick to a diet. I love your patterns and have quite a few. Phyllis
ReplyDeleteOh, I love your thoughts on fall... love falling leaves, sharpened pencils, kids trick or treating, the smell of the breeze in the air. Thanks for the cute pattern idea.
ReplyDeleteI love your free pattern and with all my 2 1/2" strips already cut all I had to do was choose the ones I wanted to use. ReplyDeleteWondertful blog hop and givaway! Thanks for doing this for us all! YOU ROCK! Polly
ReplyDeleteWhat I really like about fall is just the smell of the air. There is something about air that makes it smell like fall. It's no particular scent -- maybe a composite of all of the other outdoor smell. A morning frost just enhances the aroma.
ReplyDeleteb/
