Today's topic is Scents

When you think of fall scents, burning leaves is one thing that comes to mind.
This is one of my favorite pictures of our son Anthony helping his Dad rake and burn leaves.

In the fall we go from the smell of people grilling burgers and veggies
on the outdoor grill to cheesy potatoes baking in the oven.

Yum. Cheesy potatoes are my favorite!
We never have them in the summer.
Even with air-conditioning one does not want to start the oven very often.

Mmmmm, how about apple cider brewing on the stove?

Or Pumpkin pie baking in the oven?
and you step outside at night, it smells like fall.
It is not a scent that I can describe but I am sure you Midwesterners
who live in farm country know what I am talking about.

Then there is this little thing. It has quite a distinct scent, and it is not a good one.
Again if you do not live in farm country you probably do not have these.
(I'm talking about the little rust colored bug on the pumpkin.)
these little pests move to town.
Mom always said there is good in everything.
Mom always said there is good in everything.
The only good I can find in them is that they are a nice "fall" color.

Then there are these little critters.
You've head the saying I smell a mouse.
Well I never really smell a mouse but I certainly can hear them.
Again as soon as the crops start coming out of the fields they move into town...
to my attic. I usually have one mouse a fall.
We hear it in the attic, we set the mouse traps, next morning...history.
They are called "field mice". I wish they would stay in the fields.
They are called "field mice". I wish they would stay in the fields.

My sister Brenda has designed the kind of field mouse that you would want in your house.
Very cute.
Check it out at Country Stitches.
You won't smell or hear this mouse.

My project today is a simple little table mat or wall hanging.
Since the topic today is scents, I have named my project Pumpkin Spice
When cooler days start to show up I like to add some texture to my quilts by using a scrappy pieced fabric background mixed with wool appliqué.

I have added some interest with wire and acorn/wool ball embellishments and ric rac.
Print or download pattern here.
There are two pages. Page 1 is the templates
and page 2 is the materials needed and instructions.
You can buy the acorns on Etsy.com
Thia project is quick and easy and you could easily make it tonight.
.
I also have many new fall patterns posted on my website.
Check them out here.

I love the smells of autumn in New England almost as much as the colors. I've got to go out and get some acorn caps. Great idea for the embellishment!
ReplyDeleteI love your project. I've got to make one to start my fall decorating this year!
ReplyDeleteLoving the fall colors, scents, and the projects. Yours is so cute. Have much of your fabric and the wool, so it shouldn't take too long to put it together. Thanks to all you gals for this blog hop. Fun stuff.
ReplyDeleteIt was worth checking out your blog just to see Roseann in that witch hat! LOL :-)
ReplyDeleteMary Ellen
There is a crispness in the air accompanied by a fabulous fall scent - love it!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute- I think I have enough tans in my stash to start this.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Oh..this blog hop is sooo much fun!!! Thank you for the pumpkin spice pattern...very cute. We moved from Iowa 34 years ago...but the memories are still vivid...thanks for the scents and colors!!
ReplyDeleteI love the smells of Autumn.. The smell of a fresh rain, mixed with the smell of burning leaves.. I absolutely love the pumpkin wall art..
ReplyDeleteHi. Thanks for sharing such an adorable pattern. I love fall too. I'm often reminded of my grandmothers farm, and also my daughters birthday. This time of year has many special meanings to me. Can't wait to make your placemat.
ReplyDeleteLove the smells of fall but dread the cold wet, long winters we get in northern New York. I am loving this table mat. Very nice, small easy project for me to handle.
ReplyDeleteBrenda said...
ReplyDeleteBeing a midwesterner, the smell I can most relate to is the smell of just harvested crops. It's as though when the wheat or corn is cut, it releases its remaining growing energy as a distinct aroma.
Your blog reminds me that the oven comes back into use when the temp cools off. And just thinking about the smells of cooking and backing are making me hungry right now. I want to dig into those cheesy potatos!

Oh I see I have some sewing to do , I love it. I already have the background squares in my Awesome charm packet. I have some orange wool I am ready to go and I will see about the wool acorns too. great little piece of work. Patchall
ReplyDeleteThe mice have moved in at my parents too. They live in the country and the hay was taken off the field recently. They got a couple cats to help rid them of the mice!
ReplyDeleteI love this time of year. Here on the Canadian prairies, the colors, the scents & the weather remind us that change is once again in the air. Pumpkin & spice is definitely a favorite of mine. I think I'll do a little baking today. Thank you so much for the wallhanging.... I have to make one, so I guess I'll be making a road trip this week to pick up a little pumpkin colored wool.
ReplyDeleteI love the smells of fall! Pumpkin canles, pie, bread -- YUM! Spiced cider, apple pie, a fire in the evening to keep us toasty -- all good stuff. :) This pattern is absolutely perfect and I can't wait to get started on it -- thank you for sharing it and inspiring some fall fun!
ReplyDeleteI always look forward to your fall fabric collections...you have such talent...thank you. Your Pumpkin Spice pattern is wonderful...I already know where I'll place it in my home. Happy Fall and I hope you are enjoying a cup of cider!
ReplyDeleteI definitely need to get our Halloween decorations up today! thank you for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteApple pie, apple butter, apple cristp, apple cider, apple brown betty, apple sauce, squash baked with an apple, and there's alway "pork chops and applesauce" thanks to Alice on the Brady Bunch....love them all! Glad to see you used wool on you little project, it added a little warmth...wool is rapidly becoming my favorite creative medium.
ReplyDeleteI love it when I get a chance to see the real range of colors of fall. Here in Lincoln, things turn mostly yellow or brown, with a few splashes of reds and oranges here and there.
ReplyDeleteAnd the memory of new boxes of crayons! We never got the big 64 crayon boxes -- we had to settle for 24 (with five kids in school), and I used to be really jealous of the ones who had the big box with the sharpener on it.

Thanks for the sweet pumpkin pattern. It's amazing how many people love fall..me too. The blog hop is a great tool to get inspired.
ReplyDeleteHow cute! Those little acorns are adorable.
ReplyDeleteI have lived in the country my whole life. I so know what you are talking about when you showed those little bean bugs. They just bombard our home when the neighbor harvests his beans. You cannot even go outside during this time. They swarm you. Lovely table mat. Goodness, I am going to have lots of fall table runners/toppers. LOL Thank you. Winona
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cute table mat pattern.

ReplyDeleteI love Fall in the Midwest also, where you can really tell the seasons are changing. Here in TN it often seems Summer never ends! When the leaves finally change, it is beautiful here. Sandy, I am drawn to your patterns and fabrics and look forward to making this little table topper you gave us today.
ReplyDeleteI love your pumpkin table mat! Now I want some pumpkin pie! :)
ReplyDeleteI love you fall pictures! It's my favorite time of the year.

ReplyDeleteFun project, love working with wool.
I love Brenda's patterns and have some I still need to punch.
Debbie
It doesn't feel like Fall here yet- it's still 90 degrees outside-so looking at everyone's pictures and is really fun. Love the pumpkin spice project, I think I will make it today.

ReplyDeleteYour pumpkin pattern is darling! Thanks for describing Fall in the Country!
ReplyDeleteEverybody's been talking about pumpkin pie so dang much I'm gonna have to go bake! Luckily here in Canada our Thanksgiving holiday is only a few weeks away, so the stores are full of pumpkins. YUM! Your sweet little project is going to look mighty fine at the cottage this year when we gather to enjoy our Thanksgiving feast.
ReplyDeleteI love working with wool, and this combination is fabulous. Roseanne has a rich and colorful selection of wools in White Bear, MN.
ReplyDeleteI love this pattern, will start on it soon!
I love the scrappy background!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute, cute table mat!! Thank you so much for this delightful design. I'm off to pull some fabrics now. :)
ReplyDeleteI definitely have to have my pumpkin and apple spice candles this time of year! Cute project, and I love that it's something small I can make quickly!
ReplyDeleteYou can almost smell the pumpkin pie and apple cider in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your great description of the scents of Fall...my mouth is watering for cheesy potatoes and apple cider! Also thank you for the pumpkin pattern...I am excited to try it!
ReplyDeleteThe fall scenes are so much like rural MN. I love this design with wool accents!
ReplyDeleteGo sit outside....great idea! We just put in an outdoor fireplace with wood rocking chairs. Perfect! But I may have to make that Pumpkin mat first.
ReplyDeleteCute pattern. Applique and especially wool applique and mixing textures is my one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing. Love the fall scents photos!
ReplyDeleteFall came very early to Alberta this year and the trees are mostly all yellow and losing their leaves like crazy! We had such a poor growing season that pumpkins are in hot demand, as they are scarce this year. I love your pumpkin mat, it is adorable! I am still working on Gudrun's design for yesterday's blog, almost done!!
ReplyDeleteI grew up on a farm in Iowa so I know exactly what you're talking about!! I didn't fully appreciate an Iowa upbringing then, but I certainly do now. I love your project -- can't wait to make it. Halloween seems to be my grandkids' favorite holiday so I've been doing a lot more Halloween sewing lately. Thanks for the great project.
ReplyDeleteCute, small and simple. Just what I like. Thanks for the pattern and the fun blog hop.
ReplyDeleteFall is my favorite season....love the crunch of leaves! Thanks for the cute wallhanging!
ReplyDeleteVery cute! Who doesn't love a good pumpkin? I always enjoy the comments on rural living. I completely get it all growing up on a farm and still living a very country life.
ReplyDeleteHow cute is that pumpkin--can't wait to do all these projects!
ReplyDeleteVery cute, Sandy! I will likely be making this using cottons - wool makes me itch! :) Thank you for your generosity, and the fun read. I hear you on the mice!

ReplyDeleteI know the smell you are talking about at harvest time. Around here it is mostly the smell of alfalfa. Thank you for the wonderful little quilt pattern.
ReplyDeleteCute pattern can't wait to make it.
ReplyDeleteI live in the suburbs outside the twin cities and still catch at least one mouse every fall in my townhome - city mice try to get indoors too.
This is a really cute design. Our fall fragrance this morning is persimmon cakes. I can relate to your farm references as live on a farm (our rodent visitors are too large to be called mice - field rats and stink bugs). Thanks for the blog hop. mlwright29 (at) hotmail (dot) com
ReplyDeleteLove this pumpkin, just perfect for this season. Thank you for sharing your talents.
ReplyDeleteHave a super great sewing and quilting day.

As a former eastern Iowa girl growing up on the farm I too know the smells you discribed for fall. And those field mice, what can I say other than from damaged lawns, eaten wires in cars and their homes in my cupboards, stoves and garages, I have had my share of experiences with them also. Even still fall is my all time favorite season. Your cheesie potatoes look so yummy. Would you mind sharing your recipe. Thank you so much for your pumpkin pattern. This Hop along is so much fun.
ReplyDeletelsandes@comcast.net
yum. you got me with the photo of the cheesy potatoes. I'm from PA and we also have those orange beetles. They somehow manage to find tiny holes and appear in our house in the dead of winter. Love your pattern!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great fall pictures and the fun blog idea!
ReplyDeleteI love the ssmell of Pumpkin pir too. Thanks for the inspiration for Fall.
ReplyDeleteLove that table mat you shared...very pretty!
ReplyDeleteThat burning leaf pile brought back memories! Your pumpkin mat is ove the top! Thank you.

ReplyDeleteI know just what you mean about the smell of Autumn - smell is such an important sense don't you think??
Gill
Thank you so much for the darling pattern. I'm also thrilled with the link to your sisters site - love that little mouse! Both of you are very talented :)
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your scent story. We are having such muggy weather in the NW (muggy for us!) that it's hard to imagine cooking pie or making apple cider quite yet, but I can practically smell it in my mind.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cute pattern! I love fall-themed patterns.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest fear in the fall is mice coming in - they are never cute! Thanks so much for the pattern. It does look like an easy one to whip up in an evening & have ready for fall.
ReplyDeleteI love these pictures in your post. They bring to mind all the wonderful smells of autumn! Pumpkin Spice is my favorite by far too. Thanks for sharing the cute project! Love it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Pumpkin Spice pattern. I enjoyed your website especially your new coffee cup patterns. I love coffee things and fall.
ReplyDeleteCheesy Potato Casserole is one of my favorites. Lets see now we have pumpkin bread and now cheesy potato casserole. It sounds like dinner in the making. I love the pumpkin wall hanging! Thanks
ReplyDeleteI'm off to see what others have posted today. Need to add to that dinner list.
Having grown up in Iowa, I am familiar with all your scents and loved the photos you shared today. Very cute project! I love the wooly pumpkin! Thanks for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteI was liking the pictures....until I saw the mouse!
ReplyDeleteCute project!
Connie F
What a cute pattern! And the pieced background really makes it. Thank you for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteHi, Hope i can finally this to go through. I felt like I was reading my own profile when I read yours. We have a lot in common, the difference being, I just happen to be the youngest of 3 daughters.
ReplyDeleteThis fall blog hop is fun. I hope to make your pumpkin cloth later today. It is so cute.
Thanks,
Lois
Pumpkin Spice is truly adorable, and it looks simple enough that I could 'whip one up' this afternoon!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was growing up the 'rule' was you got to pick what kind of cake you wanted on your birthday. I always chose pumpkin pie - to my mother's chagrin, since my birthday is in July and no one had them in the stores at that time of year. To this day she rolls her eyes when she tells the story of having to heat the oven in the hottest part of the year!
Thank you for the pumkin pattern
ReplyDeleteI will be making it soon. the picture of the leaf raking by your son made me think of what my grandson just said when i told him that the leafs are going to start falling off the trees. "I real like playing in the leafs" Grandma.
Some how there "joy" becomes ours.
The smell of burning leaves is one of my favorites! This is my favorite time of year and love all of it, from the leaves to warm apple cider, making pies, and all the soups and stews that dominate our meals! Thank you for the great pattern!
ReplyDeleteWOW what a cute project. Funny about the mice. brings back memories.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great day.
Regena
I had to move into town a few years ago. I do not miss the mice or insects - but the smells and sounds...that's a different story. Just a whiff of those harvest smells makes me homesick! Your "Pumpkin Spice" pattern is adorable - thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI love the smell of bonfires, and your cheesey potatoes sounds yummy. Thankyou so much for your project, I must have a go at that.
ReplyDeleteCoincidense: I received your Moda layer cake Adoring in the mail yesterday and it's lovely. Love the colorways. Wish I had a yard of each one. Enjoyed your site and yes, I was in 4H for many years.

ReplyDeleteOH MY WORD. That is the cutest little pattern. Thank you for that.
ReplyDeleteI love Fall and all the pumpkins. The little mouse...........you can keep that one. lolol
Pumpkin in a can is very hard to find this year. The stores seem to be out of it I guess because of last years weather. :-(
Thanks again for the great pattern.
not only do I want to smell the pumpkin pie and cheesy potatoes...i want to taste them too!
ReplyDeleteSandy, I always love your blog and patterns. I am off to make this pumpkin in the center of a great background I already have put together.

ReplyDeleteGreetings Brigitte
Fall is a lot different in my part of the country--I have never smelled burning leaves, for instance. But there are pumpkin patches and cornpatches so we at least see the sights of fall. Love your little pumpkin!
ReplyDeleteAs a suburb girl, I loved the descriptions you gave for all the fall scents! I think I'd rather have a mouse in the attic than a bedbug, right? Thanks for the awesome project!! I don't do wool, so will make it out of cotton!! Polly
ReplyDeleteGreat little project and I too love the smells of autumn.
ReplyDeleteMmmmm, love the scents of fall. I could do without the mice. We seem to have them year 'round!! Drives me nuts - even though they are only in the crawl space between floors, I can hear them and it grosses me out.
ReplyDeleteYou ladies are making it so much fun for us to have some new projects to sew up. Thank you for delighting us each day with these wonderful blogs, patterns to share, and delightful themes!
ReplyDeleteKathy

One of the fall scents where I live is potatoes and potato field dirt! Every year the kids are let out of school to pick potatoes in the fall harvest. The downside to that is you start school in early to mid-August!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try your pattern tonight! Thank you!
As a fellow Iowan, I can relate to all those scents!
ReplyDeleteI lived in the midwest for a while so I know exactly what scents you're talking about. It's so crisp in the fall!!

ReplyDeleteHAPPY FALL Y'ALL!!!
The smell of fire burning brings back memories of being with my grandfather as he cleared and burned cedar. Thanks for the cute pumpkin.

This is an awfully cute design. And I checked out your other new patterns and found many that I "have" to have. I grew up in a small town in southern Wisconsin. We were on the edge of town and had a cemetery behind our house and a field across the street. We had mouse problems, too!

I love the scent of the country also. It' funny how different areas smell differently. Kathie L in Allentown
ReplyDeleteThe acorns are a super perfect touch! I love these, they make me so excited for fall (even though it is still super hot here!)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your Autumn descriptions and photos.
ReplyDeleteThe little pumpkin quilt will be so cute in my home Fall displays.
Thank you for your generosity!

i love your pumpkin! so perfect for fall!
ReplyDeleteI'm living in the outskirts of a dutch town, close to the German border. Here are vast fields with corn and potatoes and large woods. Beautiful landscape. The Autumn smells are gorgous, so pure, so earthy, just love it. And the mice... they live in my attic too in winter. I was just thinking, perhaps they are German mice... should ask them for some ID ;o))
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pattern, it's great!

I have not had any mice in my house but the crickets do like it in here! They are very noisy, especially at night! I have printed the pattern so I can make a pumpkin wall hanging. Thanks for the pattern. It is too wet to sit on my porch today but it is supposed to be sunny tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteLove the rickrack in the border.
ReplyDeleteI love the pattern. and your blog. fall is my favorite time of year. It's not too hot and not too cold. Anna

ReplyDeleteThanks to all of you for doing this blog hop. Love the pattern.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite fall scent is found in the kitchen. After a summer of trying not to heat up the house, we start making hot meals and the smell of baking bread and simmering soups fills the air. Yum.
